How I Handle Writer's Block

I have been with HubPages for about three months now. I really got excited when I found the ad in my email this summer. I had a goal that I would get published this year. And I was so glad that I didn't have to pay for anything (except my internet and utility bill) and "VOILA!" I followed the "directions"- and here I am on HubPages.com.

I see that my hub score has been increasing, and each and every hub I have written is gaining popularity. I find my self checking my stats every day. But as I gain more with hubpages, then I have gotten busier with my work schedule, keeping up with my son and daughter in college. But then I began to have some stress in the home with the spouse. And even I had some health issues to deal with. By way of emails, I have seen my favorite hubbers write more. So I desire to write more.

I have even lost sleep to finish my hubs. I enjoy writing from beginning to finish. But then, I slowed down. I couldn't get ideas. I couldn't think of any titles. I couldn't keep my eyes open at the computer ( especially when I start my day at 5 am.) Oh my goodness!? Was I getting Writer's Block? I didn't want my scores to go down. I didn't want to miss that thrill I get when someone writes a comment. The ideas were hard to pop into my head.

Writer's Block! I used to have it when I was in school and the teacher would request for me to bring in my guitar to play for the class. I was prepared before I would get there, and then I couldn't find in my head the words to sing (maybe stage fright). So what was I to do?

I went to the store and bought new note pads. I would make sure to carry one around with me so when I would get an idea, I could write it down. I would look at things to find interesting clues, getting to know what to put on paper. Should I write on reality, or should I fictionalize?

My advise to anyone who is experiencing Writer's Block to carry a pad of paper or notebook daily. Jot down ideas, and also get a pocket thesaurus and or dictionary to keep close by- words should be interesting and elaborate. Think about how the reader will react. Put yourself in their shoes. Reviewing the terms and conditions of the website written for is always good and to sign up for any webinars or training sessions are helpful tools to writing well.

Relaxation techniques are helpful ways in preparing to write. For instance, I like to listen to music before I write. I also like to have a full stomach when I write. Although I have prolonged my hunger pangs to finish a hub. Some people like to take a walk before they write. Others bathe, or even take naps before they write. Whatever your vice is, having the correct attitude is best.

It is so nice to have my ideas on paper. I have saved just about all my poetry I have ever written on paper since my child hood. I am so glad I have a trail of memories to look back on, and now I am able to share with my Hub Family. Who needs to go out to a bar or club to socialize when there is HubPages? Another remedy for my Writer's Block by just being inspired by my followers here on these web pages.

St Paul has written something significant in his letter to the Philippians, chapter 4, verses 8 and 9:

" Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things. Whatever you have learned, or received, or heard from me, or seen in me-- put it into practice. And the God of Peace will be with you."

Great hub. I get ideas for hubs when I bike ride and write them down first thing after the ride. I've experienced a little 'writer's block' recently and wrote a hub about it too. Voted up.

I agree with Dave because that's what I do , I ask the Holy Spirit to help me and He does.

If you stress over it writing becomes hard and your thoughts jumbled up.

Useful hub, voted it up.

HI CMC,

An interesting topic and for now something that I'm not experiencing thank goodness!

When I go for a run ideas for writing sometimes pop into my mind and I play with the idea in my mind until I reach home and then I scribble my thoughts down before they escape me. I also get ideas in the middle of the night so I get up out of bed and quickly note it down. Another time I get ideas is first thing in the morning and also when I'm generally out and about I observe life and get an idea for which I might like to develop.

Also sometimes when I start a poem or whatever, I might not be in the mood or have the energy to finish it off so I leave it in an unfinished writing folder which I can return to any time in the future. Sometimes I get an idea and can finish it in one sitting - that's the way I prefer to write but doesn't always happen like that so I go with the flow and don't force things.

Useful hub and thanks for sharing it with us. Cheers!

CMCastro: The one thing I noticed in this Hub is; "I couldn't get any ideas." "I couldn't think of any titles." Often when we try to accomplish these things on our own we will get in a rut. But, The Holy spirit is filled with themes, and titles. We simply have to open our minds to Him and His thoughts will begin to flow like a river through us.

When we try to do it on our own, our thoughts become muddled we get an idea but cannot expand on it, it just doesn't work.

Holy Spirit has often come to me at 2:and 3and 4 a.m. as I lay sleeping and began filling my mind with what needs to be written, and then awakens me and says start writing, here's what needs to be written. Once I asked to sleep more, but His answer was "No,it ust be now." So I got up and the words just flowed to my mind, and as quickly as I would write, the more the thoughts came.

Just relax and Let the Holy Spirit Guide you. Guaranteed He will.

Brother Dave.

I walk my little shih ztu everyday and often come up with some good ideas for a hub. But, like you say, they are soon forgotten if we do not write them down. thank you my friend for the wonderful hub.

I write the hubs in my head while I am bathing...you were right.

Actually I do most of my thinking in the bath tub.

Beautiful hub. Thanks!!
